A system for managing work at a shipyard: job packs, working time reports, employee reviews and bonuses. AI agents made further development of this legacy system economically viable again.

Returning to legacy code
The system I helped build for the shipyard had been running for years. Even a small change starts with understanding the connections and why they exist. Without AI, I would not have returned to modifying it at this cost.
My role
I reconstructed the environment and context, worked through business rules and chose solutions. Agents helped read the old code, trace dependencies and implement fixes. I remained responsible for checking that each change served the user’s need.
Developing the existing system
We worked on time reports, rating history, imports and bonus calculations. Prototypes helped agree behaviour with users before changing the old system. A restored environment and tests gave us somewhere to verify fixes outside production.
Code moves faster. Decisions still take time
AI made it economically viable to work on this system again. It probably made it faster too, though I have no measured multiplier. Someone still has to define the process, settle exceptions and work out the solution. That remains much of the human work.
Result
We restored the environment and resumed development. New changes can be checked on staging.
An internal client system. The presentation shows prototypes; the modernisation described here covers work verified locally and on staging.
